[GUILLAUME DE MACHAUT], c. , was born in a little village of Machaut. In he entered the service of Jean de Luxembourg as secretary. In he became a canon at Verdun Cathedral; in , a canon at Arras Cathedral; and in , a canon at Rheims Cathedral. Analysis. Machaut's Mass was certainly a landmark in musical history, but this Mass is far from being avant-garde merely for the sake of uniquity, it is considered to be one of the most advanced examples of choral polyphony in the history of music. Here, this mass is candidly assessed without the knowledge-enriched air of a regular music essay.
